As humans I believe we have evolved by growing alongside each other. In the early years of civilisation by sharing knowledge, learning from each other and inventing things from the necessities of the time. Once civilisations expanded and societies progressed, humans started competing with each other. Divisions in society began with classifications of people basis work they did in turn leading to some jobs being considered superior to others. Thus was born division of labour!
So, what does this have to do with FOMO?! Well, its my take and anyone is free to disagree. Classifications basis work, education, wealth etc lead to people settling in different homogeneuos groups forming their own societies. From here on, the intrinsic nature of humans seem to be on living with the society. Anyone who thinks differently was called a rebel or revolutionary. So, society seems to have been built on the very concept of FOMO -Fear of missing out!
What is FOMO? It can be understood as the desire to stay continually in the know of what is happening in other peoples lives. This has been always the case with humans. Now, the rate at which we get to know is instant and also, we seem to know what is happening (ofcourse only the viewership worthy events) in the lives of complete strangers too!
In earlier times, knowing about lives of strangers was generally given the term GOSSIP😄Now it has a fancy name...Social Media😀With the total sweep made by various social media apps in our lives the effect of FOMO is taking a new dimension in redefining the mental health of our society and younger generations to come. That is becoming worrisome as its leading to SAD (Stress, Anxiety and Depression). So, how to work around this FOMO.
Believe me, every human will have FOMO whether he is a philosopher or a common man. Examples of FOMO ranging from wanting to have the latest model dresses to eating a trending food item or catching on the latest movie or following the trending diet plans. So, how to help yourself and the youngsters you work with deal with FOMO
- Stop comparison. Learn to focus on what you have than what you do not. Count your blessings and name them one by one 😊
- Learn to see beyond immediate pleasures. Instant gratification has become second nature now in all one does. Develop patience and learn to experience the excitement in waiting for things to unfold.
- Be in the now. Everyone cannot have everything and that is ok. That is the law of nature. Practice gratitude in daily life for even the littilest thing.
